I have recently found a desire to obtain a wand. I was going to make one, but I have some questions.

What counts in a wand? I do not want a wand with a lot of decorations.

What makes a wand a wand?

What materials should be used for the base wand itself?

Furthermore, feel free to offer me any other tips or guides on the subject.

Any and all information on this will be happily and readily accepted.

Thanks in advance,

A wand can be made of anything, really. It's typically a forearm-to-tip-of-middle-finger length stick (for lack of a better word) simply used to direct energy.

I've had a wand made of steel. One of my friends makes wands out of willow branches, and wraps the handles in leather. Some people choose to put crystals on the tips as this can help enhance your energy, especially if the crystal is a good clear quartz point.

I typically recommend using wood for the base wand. Metals are energetically a pain to work with if you aren't based around metallic energy to begin with.

The most key thing, however, is to follow your INTUITION. Do what you feel is right. Put what decorations feel right, use whatever materials feel right, etc. The powers that be will let you know if you're using the wrong stuff.

Hope that helps.

as harvester said anything can be counted as a wand as long as it has been blessed or cleansed.

What makes a wand a wand?
its just an item that can channel the engergy during a spell or rutial or even meditation really

anything can be used but mainly witches tend to use natural woods because its closer to nature, but to be honest u can use whatever you feel comfortable with

I would always go with wood of some kind, but only because traditionally wood and precious metals are the materials that were used and I suppose I am a traditionalist at heart. But a poor one, so precious metal would be out of the question. smile.gif

But for people who are more modern there are modern metal ones, and carved crystal ones. The only ones I would say avoid at all costs are the plastic ones! Just yuk!

Good hunting.

Hey there,

I personally would use wood to make a wand from and but a crystal or quartz tip on it, or even your birthstone as this would make it more personal to you and again enchances energies.

Wood it seems is the most common used material, there are many woods you can chose but I'd would use one that goes with my starsign, again to make it abit more personal and special to me.

Here is a list of wand woods for star signs incase you want them:

Aries ~ Alder
Taurus ~ Willow
Gemini ~ Hawthorn
Cancer ~ Oak
Leo ~ Holly
Virgo ~ Hazel
Libra ~ Vine
Scorpio ~Ivy
Sagittarius ~ Elder
Capricorn ~ Birch
Aquairius ~ Rowan
Pisces ~ Ash

As for what you could decorate it with Runes, your star sign, feathers, beads and many other sybmols can be used. I'd agree with harvester here

"follow your INTUITION. Do what you feel is right. Put what decorations feel right, use whatever materials feel right, etc. The powers that be will let you know if you're using the wrong stuff."

All in all happy wand making smile.gif

A note about Hawthorn

It has a mind of it's own, so wands made of it can very unpredictable.
You must also get permission from the tree you take the wood from (Hawthorn will even ask you what your intentions are for the wand) so make sure you take the wood with good intentions because Hawthorn will quite happily mess with your magic if you lie to her.

Those correspondences are great GD thanks. smile.gif
My favourite tree is the Rowan, and according to your list there it turns out it is also the wood that corresponds to my star sign. otherkin/687.gif
I would always use wood for making a wand. Somehow for me it just feels like the right material for it.
You could decorate it as much or as little as you want, but I would put one or two symbols of some kind on it to represent you. If you can do that it will make it more personal, and it will help it connect with you and you connect with it. If you are connected you will work better together.
It is intended to channel and focus your energy, so the closer you feel to each other the better the channeling and focus will be.
I like the idea of a Crystal on the end, but these are only really intended to bring the energy to a sharp point as it leaves the wand. If you don't want a particularly fine aim then crystals aren't necessary.

Blessing, consecrating and dedicating a wand help it work more closely with you aswell, so you should remember to do that too once the wand is finished. smile.gif

I saw some really beautiful spun glass ones while I was away, I wish I had had the time to look at them properly and choose one for myself, but unfortunately at the time I was on my way to an appointment and couldn't have more than just a quick peek as I passed. Once I was finished and free for the rest of the day I did go back, but the stall was gone. otherkin/sad-smiley-056.gif

Wooden ones can be lovely too though, and I had always been drawn to wooden ones until I saw the ones made of Japanese glass. I'm going to see if I can find one to buy online, though it won't be the same as choosing it myself it's the best I can do now, goodness only knows if i'll ever get back there again.

Just to be different.
I made a "wand" out of a six foot long piece of Ash (Fraxinus exelsior).
it's lovely to scribe a circle with when I am working but it's too big to wave over some one when I want to do any healing kind of work. I would probably get arrested for assault with a deadly weapon if I tried that.
Fortunately I don't know anyone to try that on, but I am on the look out for a smaller "portable" version of it so I can carry one when I go out.

P.S welcome back Faith. I hope you enjoyed your trip away. otherkin/animal-smiley-038.gif

I wonder..
Could you go back to the tree that gave you the wood for the 6ft wand and ask it for a smaller branch? That way you would have a more useable wand but it would feel almost as much suited to you as the large one?

Thanks for the return welcome Wilde. smile.gif
It was a working holiday but I did manage to have a wonderful time aswell. I learnt such a lot, and saw amazing things, and I got paid for it too. I don't know how I got so lucky. otherkin/lol.gif

I wonder if the tree is still there. Thats a great idea Faith thanks I'll try that.
I am glad you had a great time as well as learning a lot. I like learning new things too.
