Haunting Silence- 08-10-2007
I have been asked to put up a post about Unicorns to try and explain a few things and perhaps correct a few misunderstandings and misconceptions.
I am not sure exactly what you will all wish to know, but I thought I would begin by explaining a little about myself personally and then move on to Unicorns in a general herd sense.

I am not human, I am a unicorn in a mortal body. Although the body will grow old and die, I will not, I will move to a new body... I have been doing this for a long long time, and will continue to do so for a long time to come.

This I copied from one of my posts put in another forum. I hope no-one minds. This was the one and only time I had ever written down what being Unicorn meant to me and I cannot imagine being able to put it better no matter how long I try.

QUOTE
To be unicorn means different things to each one of us, and putting it into words is very hard, but I will do my very best to describe to you what it means to me.

If you imagine yourself in a wooded glade, it is sunrise and there is a slight mist rising, leaving glittering droplets of dew on the ferns and grass at your feet, and adorning the webs of spiders with sparkling diamonds. As you breathe in and out your breath makes puffs of steam and the silence all around feels like your best friend.
You feel yourself connected to the universe on a deep unconscious level, and it is as if no-one else exists in all of time and space.
You sense the presence of others and they are smiling down on you in approval. They have missed you they say and they welcome you back to where you truly belong. You feel the salutation of the trees almost like an embrace and their genuine acceptance of you flows over you like pleasant summer rain, cleansing, reviving and uplifting your spirit.
You know you are home and it is right.
You are Unicorn and to be Unicorn is all.

There are not many of us in the world, and we are usually much in the background, watching. Seeing all, missing nothing. Noting and observing, but only participating if it is important. Our naturally shy and cautious natures make us appear unfriendly, but we are mostly just wary and reserved, and a little distrustful if I am to be completely honest."

Usually shy and solitary I enjoy my privacy. I am not much for joining groups or societies, but sometimes in order for my life to fall as it should it is important to be flexible and willing to go against my natural inclinations.
Just to explain that last comment a little.....I was living in Wales when I joined the forum the quote above comes from, hoping to meet a lady I was intended to get to know very well, but it was not to be and my plans changed quite fast. I left Wales shortly after that and now live in England.

I am, by my nature female, but I have existed in both sexes. (I prefer female though, perhaps because it is more natural to me.)

Zygopterix you once asked me
QUOTE
May I also ask are you born as a unicorn in a human body or do you "move in later" as with some otherkin.
And I answered
"The question about being born in a human body or moving in later is a difficult one to answer as I can and have done both. Sometimes there are lives that need to be lived further than their human inhabitants can take them, that is when I am called upon to carry the essence until it has accomplished that which it was born to do. Then comes a parting of the ways and I begin again.
Such is my life and so has it always been."
I thankyou at this time for your insightful and thoughtful question.
I am happy also at this time to be able to answer your other question to me as I did not have the opportunity to do so before.
QUOTE
Haunting silence do you remember things from before the change over or do you have to wing it and hope no one really notices?

And in answer I say....... I have to wing it. It gets easier the more often you do it though and I am now as much of an expert in these matters as it is possible to be.
Please do not get the wrong impression of me or Unicorns as a herd, we are not all sweetness and innocence. I would not say I do not have a dark side because I do. I have killed in past lives and would do so again if it became necessary, and I do not even have the excuse that I kill to eat.
However like so many of my kind I do what I must.
I hope this helps you to understand me a little better, and as soon as I am able I will post up my myth busting post for Unicorns.
Come To Me could you please tell me first. Where would you like me to place it when it is finished? Here, or is there to be a seperate section for Myth Busting?
Thankyou.

Thank you Haunting silence for your candid answers.
They have certainly helped me a lot and I appreciate your time spent to answer.
I think there are a number of Kin out there who if they are honest will if the need arises do what they must.
Personally I find that quite comforting.

I look forward to your myth buster post with interest.

Me too.

Haunting Silence,
If you just put your post here then I will pin it. It will then always be at the top of the section where no-one can miss it. Maybe I'll make a special Myth busting place for them later, to be honest it depends how many we get.
A future section perhaps if there are enough?

ElvinDreams- 08-20-2007
Do you want me to put mine on the Elves here too Lady C?
That way they'll be easy to find.
Let me know.

zygopterix- 08-20-2007
Would anyone like one about Phoenix's's's ?

that's hard to say.
If so I will have a go at writing something for the (I guess) were section.

P.S don't all say no at once otherkin/lol.gif

DarkAngel- 08-20-2007
Personally, I would love to read each and everyone's "myth buster" as you all have put it, and would like to hear more of what you all have to say.

That would be great everyone.
I enjoyed Lady C's Vampire 'Myth Busting' post very much and I'm looking forward to reading others.

Haunting Silence- 08-25-2007
Finally my post is ready. I am sorry it took so long, but for such secretive and private creatures that there is such scant information on there are a lot of beliefs out there that really need busting. otherkin/lol.gif

UNICORN MYTHS

Unicorns have wings................................No they don't.
Unicorns were based on real animals, such as the one-horned rhinoceros or the narwhal—a small whale with a single long tooth or tusk that resembles a spiral ivory horn.......................................... No. These creatures look nothing like a horse, one of them is aquatic for goodness sake!
Unicorns speak Elvish...................................Yes most unicorns can and do speak fluent Elvish, however their native language is Cornish, which few but the Unicorns themselves speak now.
Unicorns are larger than the average size associated with horses.................No in actul fact Unicorns are usually slightly built creatures who are a little shorter than your average horse.
Unicorns are always silvery white in colour......................No. Unicorns can be any natural colour, and a range of different shades of one colour all on the same being.
There are blue, red, green and purple unicorns...........................No there aren't.
Unicorns have wings.........................................No they don't.
A Unicorn's mane and tail are always a silvery white colour........................Yes they are.
Unicorns leave no tracks or hoof prints..............................Yes they do, but they tread so lightly that tracks are very faint and mostly impossible to see.
Unicorns float just above the ground......................No they don't. See answer above.
Unicorns are telepathic, with the ability to transmit their thoughts and feelings to anyone they wish....................Yes that's right.
Unicorns can change the colour of their horn at will............................No they can't. The horn is dark at first and lightens with time. This is the only colour change that occurs.
If you remove a Unicorn's horn the Unicorn dies.................................No it doesn't.
A Unicorn's horn re-grows......................................No it doesn't.
A Unicorn's horn has magical healing properties...............................No it hasn't.
Unicorn blood is poisonous.....................................No it isn't.
To kill a Unicorn curses the slayer with death..................................Yes
Unicorns prefer to live in woodland areas avoiding wide open spaces...................No, although woodland glades are preferable for resting and safe shelter, Unicorns are nomads and wander the world freely, wherever the whim takes them.
Unicorns are gentle, docile creatures.......................They are gentle if left undisturbed, but do not be fooled. Unicorns can and do kill if the need arises.
Unicorns can have wings................................No they can't.
Unicorns prefer to live alone...........................................No they tend to live in family groups or small herds.
Unicorns are very territorial and if two groups should meet a fight to the death woudl be inevitable....................No. Territory is unimportant to the nomadic Unicorn. If two groups should meet they would greet each other joyfully, and may even travel together for a while until a difference in final destination forces a sorrowful parting.
Unicorn leadership is based on strength and power..................................No Unicorns respect wisdom above all else and understand that with age comes the grea-*test*-('") wisdom.
Unicorn males will fight for the right to mate with a female of mateable age......................No. The choice is always the female's.
Unicorns mate for life....................Yes they do.
Unicorns do not eat........................Yes they do. Like everything else they need energy to function. They may not eat cheeseburgers or grass, but they do eat. Many in human form tend to be vegetarians, and also draw energy from the moon to sustain themselves. They may eat grass and hay when in four hooved Unicorn form but not necessarily. They draw energy from the moon, and will also eat oats and carrots, but then lots of people eat oats and carrots too.
Unicorns bring eternal happiness to those who touch them...................No they don't.
Unicorns can only be touched by a human if they happen to be a female and a virgin.......................No. Innocence is what calls to a Unicorn. (Virginity seems to have been substituted for innocence in these modern times, but not even female virginity would tempt a Unicorn to allow an adult human to touch it.) Only a child (usually under 8) has the kind of innocence that could call strongly enough to elicit an appearance.
There are many theories of a foolproof way to catch a Unicorn. If you are truly pure in mind, heart, body and spirit, and this purity matches or is greater than that of the animal it will be possible...........................Rubbish. No Unicorn would allow itself to be caught by a human no matter how cunning or 'pure of mind, heart' etc that human may be.

I think this covers most of the basic questions but if you can think of any more please post them under this one and I will include them in my original post complete with the answer if I have one for you.
Oh and before I close this topic for now did I mention that Unicorns DO NOT have wings? otherkin/lol.gif

zygopterix- 08-25-2007
Thats brilliant Haunting Silence
there are some there that I didn't know and some I never would have thought of in the first place like the not eating one or blue red and purple ones otherkin/8).gif
I learnt a lot from your writing.
Thankyou very much for the post.otherkin/unicorn.gif

ComeToMe- 08-25-2007
Oh that's excellent. And please don't worry about how long it took you to post it, it was worth the wait, honestly. smile.gif
I hadn't heard of the possibility of a purple Unicorn either. What an odd thought.
I HAD heard the one about them being able to change the colour of their horns to match their shoes and handbag, and wondered where the thought had come from. But now that you have explained it makes really good sense how someone seeing a Unicorn on three seperate occasions with a horn of a different colour each time might think that the Unicorn had control of the process.
And Unicorn blood is poisonous? Who on earth thought of that one I wonder?

Thanks very much for your post, your research and all your hard work in bringing this to us. smile.gif

You sound fairly certain that Unicorns don't have wings Haunting Silence. otherkin/lol.gif
I take it that is one of the widely believed myths about Unicorns that annoys you a lot?

I had always thought that they lived a solitary life too. I don't know why. I suppose mainly because you don't see pictures of groups of them, usually only one, standing in a moonlit clearing, or in a rearing position framed against the full moon. I am glad you are not a lonely species. smile.gif
Having the company of others like yourself is always preferable to being alone in my view. I like spending a certain amount of time alone, but company is what makes the time alone so precious.
