I have recently begun researching Babylonian Gods and Goddesses and came upon this one which I thought might be of interest.
Tiamat is a fascinating example of modern culture completely overriding the myths and ancient texts, and converting a subject convincingly from what they read to what they needed to have.
She is almost universally thought of today as a Sea Serpent or Dragon form, but the Babylonians never actually described her as a Dragon of any kind. In the Enuma Elis (the Babylonian myth of creation) Tiamat is said to have given birth to various creatures including Dragons, Serpents and Merpeople so I can see where the idea came from, but the description of her is quite vague and no mention of scales is to be found anywhere!
However the image was locked firmly in place when the role play board game Dungeons and Dragons adopted her as their Draconic Goddess. Even though the Babylonian version only had one head, that didn't worry the creators of D&D, they went ahead with their artistic licence anyway, and millions became familiar with Tiamat's multi headed image as the Queen of Evil Dragon kind.
And so it would seem that from a vague description in an ancient creation text, Tiamat emerged as one of the most important and evil fantasy creations ever to hit the pages of an RPG.

I wonder would the ancient babylonians be pleased, flattered or phoning a good solicitor about now??
