The Giving Plague

This short story was written by the author of The Postman, a tale set in the "savage aftermath of a devastating bio-war," and made into a movie starring Kevin Costner.
I would be interested to hear what any of you think of it.

That was very interesting.
I wonder if it is actually possible that altruism is a form of disease that cannot be controlled or cured.
If that were the truth, wouldn't the altruistic be hacked off?
There they are patting themselves on the back for being such fine, upstanding members of society and what it actually is is a disease they have no control over whatsoever.
I have to say the irony in such a situation would please me.
