The Black Cat

I just read this, and wondered if anyone else here had, and what they thought of it?

Is the second cat a seperate and unfortunate creature, who just happened to be caught up in all of this? Or do you think that it is a spirit cat? Or a real cat that was possessed by the spirit of the murdered Pluto so that he could take revenge on his torturer and eventual murderer?

This was an interesting story I thought. A bit tame by todays horror story standards maybe, but after all it was written in 1841. For those days it's a bit horrific really.

I seem to remember this being redone in one of the Hammer House short story films. I think it was vincent Price who took the part of our callous cat mutilater.
As for the cat perhaps he was in cahouts with Pluto and when the master of the house became too much for Pluto to deal with he went to his friend (obviously after his unfortunate demise) and asked him to deal with his murderer, but did it go wrong or did the cats know that those events were destined to happen all along?. Did they cause them or were they merely the tools of some other power?
Indeed what had the other victim of the story done to be used in such a way.
Trying not to give the plot away here.
Its an excellent story for all that it is a little dated and yet it is not unneccessarily gory which a lot of books nowadays are.

I have always both hated and loved this story.
Hated because of my black cat connection, and loved because the victor was the cat in the end. Which is only as it should be. otherkin/purr.gif

I think that the two cats were working together, in the end, to bring about the end of the man that would best suit their sense of justice.

I can't say I enjoy it, but it's well written and for it's time, incredibly creepy.
