Well it's been a long time since I ate a really big chunk but in my experience the best way to cook a big steak is to braize and grill it.
Don't use any extra seasoning except a little salt and make sure to put either melted butter or olive oil all over it (that way it doesnt dry out)
Then put it in a really hot frying pan for a few seconds on each side just til it starts cooking,Take it out and put some more Olive oil or butter on and put it in under a medium grill tightly, but still flat, wrapped in foil so that it keeps all its juices inside.
turn it over after a little while and stab with a knife to see how cooked it is.
Depending on how cooked you or your friend want it, check for a little redness in the juice for a rare to medium rare steak and for clear juices for a fully cooked one.
One last thing if you want a really good steak buy it from a butcher not the supermarket.
It will have been better looked after at the butchers (supermarkets just chill everything and that doesn't give the best results with steak)
Oh and try asking the butcher about cooking times he/she will know how long to do it for each thickness of meat.
Hope that helps.
