Gentleman Death- 11-14-2008
I was just wondering, as i'm a psychology student, has there actually been an "in-depth" study into otherkin, weres and vampires?

If anyone knows could you post a link?

If not, do you think it might be benefical that one is done?
Although given what psychologists might say, prpably not .

Was that the one where a group of psychiatrists got together over coffee and donuts one midmorning, and one of them said "Have you heard about all these weirdos who think they're Vampires and Elves and stuff?" and one of the others said "Oh yeah, they're all crazy!"
Diagnosis safely arrived at, life goes on as before.

Or has there been another one that I missed? otherkin/lol.gif

while I was doing a search for a study on otherkin I stumbled across this post by a dragon called Windrider. I rather like the sensible way he/she writes and I thought I would share so here you go.
It's quite long but I found it to be well worth reading.

LOL
Something like that Faith.
That article ws quite interesting Zygo, thank you.

I was wondering what kind of approach a pyschologist might take and what things they might come up with.
Whether they would go for a slighly Freudian view, (that it was something in our childhood that led us to "behave and act" this way or that we didn't bond with our parents or peers somehow) or try to find reasons for our "human bashing" or "need to be different" because i'm sure they would say it was a need.
Or whether they would be completely baised and say we have some form of mental condition, but like the aritcle says
"inhuman identity is not itself a mental illness".

I think it would be interesting to see some of the actual approachs they would take.

i would take a more "the unconcious mind influences most of what we do" approach because though i dont know why i am, i know that i am kin.

Fair stance, I like it smile.gif
could bring in a bit of ego defence there too i'm sure

terri-vale- 11-16-2008
hmm im not actualy sure where i stand on this. d believe but i also have a scientific mind and so i have gone through stages of thinging, " well what if their all mad? is it all down to the workings of the DNA or simply down to how they were brought up?"

it is very interesting for people on the outside to look in and try have a veiw on it. to be honest non- kin cant really have a view on it, becuase they dont experience truly what it is like to be kin.

Yeah, but honestly when has that ever stopped lots of them from having an opinion and talking about it loudly and for a long time? otherkin/lol.gif

I'm sorry but I don't buy that. Unfortunately I think it's rubbish and I'll tell you why.
Since 'other-human' identity is usually considered to be a mental illness (they shut you away pretty darned fast if you tell people you think you're Napoleon, Cleopatra or Joan of Arc) then in-human identity doesn't stand much chance of not being does it?

Gentleman Death- 11-16-2008
Ah a fresh view smile.gif

They don't lock people up for believing they have a past life. They might do for acting like the person their past life is supposed to be on the other hand.

I'll admit it doesnt stand a good chance of coming out well, but you never know.

terri-vale- 11-16-2008
i dont think anything out of the ordinary stands a chance. anything that contradicts a belief of a person will be ignored.

ComeToMe- 11-16-2008
Yes you're right GD they wouldn't lock you away these days for thinking you used to be Napoleon, but I bet they'd get pretty worried if you went to them and said you were Napoleon.
If they didn't lock you up, you can bet they'd get you some pretty intensive 'help' with it. otherkin/lol.gif

Gentleman Death- 11-16-2008
Intensive help? lol

It's usually the beliefs of the minority that get walked over by the majority Terri. And the majority does believe were possibly insane.

That's what I said.
Not if you say you were but if you say you are. It freaks them out, trust me. otherkin/lol.gif

"It freaks them out, trust me" - past experience? otherkin/lol.gif
