The Russian novelist Alexander Solzhenitsyn was a personal hero of mine. He wrote the kind of books that no-one dared to even dream about reading in the USSR in those days.
In the end he was forced into exile by the soviet adminsitration for his personal account of the gulag system and for giving details of the horrors of the slave labour camps in books that were openly critical of the government of the USSR and their policies. This exile was to last for twenty years.
A visionary, and an avid campaigner for a better life for the people of the old USSR, Solzhenitsyn was given a Nobel prize for literature in 1970.
Aged 83 he died at his home in Moscow.
